ABSTRACT

Manholes do get lost and buried. Locating them and raising them to grade are important maintenance functions. Several tricks of the trade deal with locating buried manholes. Magnetic locators are must-have tools. They detect ferrous materials. Check the maps and measure off where the buried manhole is supposed to be. Sweep the area with the locator. If it detects a manhole sized metallic object, great! Hold the detector over your steel toe boots until it gives the same pitch squeal. This approximates how deep the manhole cover is buried.
