ABSTRACT

The uniqueness of this chapter is that it deals with the prime mover-the electrochemical energy power convertor used in laptops and mobile telephones-whose daily charging and discharging processes play out many of the earlier chapters of this book! Indeed, the Li-ion battery (LIB) is the paradigm of the energy-and mobility-hungry  twenty-rst century!! Building a better battery is the current story of reinventing rechargeable cells to (1) cut costs and (2) boost capacity. A cheap long life for a secondary battery is apparently the goal of applied solid state ionics.
