ABSTRACT

The term “switch” is somewhat confusing, as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) uses this term to denote both disconnecting (from power source) means and resistance insertion to delimit current flow (to run a motor). In this chapter, switches intended as disconnects are discussed as disconnecting switches or disconnects, whereas switches intended to prevent sufficient current flow to run a motor (without completely disconnecting from the power source) are discussed as on/off switches. Note: Snap switches are considered to be on/off switches.
