ABSTRACT

Space must be provided around all electric equipment to permit ready and safe operation and maintenance. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) specifies both the width (30 inches or the width of the panel, whichever is greater), and the depth, which is at least 3 feet and based on the voltage of the equipment. Points of control must be located so that persons are not likely to come in contact with any live part or moving part of the equipment while turning on the lights. When normally enclosed live parts are exposed for inspection or servicing, the working space must be suitably guarded. Where electric equipment might be exposed to physical damage, enclosures or guards must be so arranged and of such strength as to prevent damage. In all cases, the working space must permit at least a 90-degree opening of equipment doors or hinged panels.
