ABSTRACT

Peripheral nerves (PNs) are the communication links of the human body. Neural signals, called action potentials (APs) travel along these PNs to and from the central nervous system (CNS) to ensure reliable innervations of the skin, to control skeletal muscle contractions, and for rapid signaling of sensory events. Injuries to the PNS, known as peripheral nerve injury (PNI) are common and are a major source of disability, impairing the ability to move muscles and/or feel normal sensations, and may result in painful neuropathies. This injury or amputation also disrupts the bidirectional communication link to the CNS.
