ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with theories of chromatography. We can

design or operate chromatographic processes very easily if we

have fundamental knowledge of the theories of chromatography.

Since we do not intend to describe the theories of chromatog-

graphy in detail, only the basic equations and lor the analytical

solutions are given together with the basic idea and the impor-

tant assumptions in the theory. For readers interested in de-

tails of each chromatographic theory, the original papers quoted

in this chapter and the following excellent reviews or books and

references therein give more than adequate coverage (Giddings,

1965; Grushka et al., 1975; Heftman, 1975; Morris and Morris,

1964; Yang and Tsao, 1982). In addition, some of the reviews

or the textbooks for a fixed - bed adsorption process or residence

time distribution will be also helpful in understanding the

theories of chromatography (for example, Lightfoot et al., 1962;

Sherwood et al., 1975; Vermeulen et al., 1984).
