ABSTRACT

Perceptions of what is ethical and what is not differ dramatically; however, some guides exist to help clarify the differing points of view about ethics. Philosophy provides one such guide. Three major frameworks are discussed in the literature: (1) deontology that is based upon one’s duties and principle; (2) teleology, utilitarianism, or consequentialism that is based upon the consequences or results of action; and (3) virtue ethics that focuses on an individual’s character and motivation for action.
