ABSTRACT

Commercial scale encapsulation is an elusive term and can largely be dened based on the target market. Commercial success could be dened in terms of nancial performance, pounds produced, or even manufacturing capability. Today’s microencapsulation applications are present in a wide array of everyday items such as pharmaceutical, food, agricultural, and scents. In each case, the commercial scale is widely different. This chapter will be devoted to a product that has a 60-year history of commercial success. This product also has the distinction of being the rst commercial product to use microcapsules. The product is the NCR PAPER* brand of carbonless paper. In this chapter, the aspects of developing a product based on innovation, applied technology, emphasis on quality, customer satisfaction, and manufacturing capabilities will be examined from the perceptive of microencapsulation. The history of carbonless paper also provides a prelude to new commercial applications for the microencapsulation process (Figure 59.1).
