ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter, we have shown that morphology of transition metal stearate LB films depend on their headgroup coordination. More specifically, it is shown that “pinhole” defect-free LB multilayers are obtained for bidentate bridged headgroups in cobalt stearate. The next question that comes is the sufficiency of the bidentate bridged coordination in yielding near-perfect defectfree LB multilayers. We have answered this question by identifying specific molecular conformers created by processes of bulk reaction and reaction at air-water interface. We have also shown the correlation between the specific conformer and morphology of multilayers comprising molecules in that conformer. We have also discussed the significant role of supramolecular interactions at the air-water interface in deposition of highly reproducible coherent multilayers by choosing specific molecular conformer states.
