ABSTRACT

All the impact energy is presumed to be absorbed by the ship side only, since the iceberg will be modeled as a completely rigid body (see chapter 3.1).

The damage occurring to the ship side structure is analyzed in terms of the various phases of the collision: penetration through the outer shell, deformation of the double side, indentation and later rupture of the inner envelope. The whole process is described in terms of force-penetration diagrams that are derived for the relevant parameters identifying the scenarios.
