ABSTRACT

While funding for mechanistic EMF studies has been signicantly reduced, the number of sources for ELF and MW exposure in everyday life is constantly growing. Moreover, some modern devices emit EMF in wide frequency ranges covering both ELF and MW. In particular, mobile phones not only expose the user to MW but also to ELF.5-10 ITIS Foundation (The Foundation for Research on Information Technologies in

Society) has performed detailed measurement of ve mobile phones.11 All ve phones have shown the maximum B-eld on the back side with extrapolated pulse heights between 35 and 75 μT. At this location, four out of the ve tested phones exceeded the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) reference levels by several harmonics of 217 Hz. The maximum violation by a factor of two was detected at 650 Hz. The B-eld on the front side of the phones tested is by a factor two to six times smaller and varies between 8 and 20 μT. The maximum DC elds were detected near the phone loudspeaker and reached levels up to 20 mT (half of the corresponding ICNIRP reference level of 40 mT).
