ABSTRACT

Pinnacles and sharp pyramid-like forms comprising basal glacial sediment (till) situated along the sides of alpine valleys. They form where rainwater erodes a sheet of till unevenly. Large boulders commonly cap the pyramids; these are responsible for the localised protection of the till from erosion (Figure E.1). Earth pyramids in the Ritten area, high above the city of Bozen (Bolzano) in the Italian Alps. These unusually pink and accessible pyramids are a famous tourist attraction. They are located about 700 m above the floor of the Eisack Valley. The sheet of glacial sediment from which they are derived was deposited by the largest glacier system of the Late Glacial Maximum, Etsch Glacier, on the southern slope of the Alps. https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781315373157/95d5ad9e-a71d-4f11-a609-2c025b95638b/content/fige_1.jpg"/>
