ABSTRACT

Progress of human civilization has always been driven by knowledge acquired and curated over generations. Philosophers in the 17th century realized that humans being the creator of their own society, can understand its dynamics and change it for the betterment of the humankind. Knowledge about natural phenomena, or “scientific” knowledge, has been systematically applied for progressive material benefit of human beings over the last few centuries. Intellectual growth and sustainable development has been fueled by knowledge about the cultural values of the societies. In modern times, digital computers and worldwide networking present an opportunity to digitize and share information pertaining to all walks of human life. The “digital revolution” had led to the availability of a mind-boggling volume of information online. For effective utilization of such vast amounts of information, knowledge management for culture and development is considered extremely important by many countries and has become a significant thrust of the United Nations as well. Human civilization is poised to transit from an information-driven society to a knowledge-driven society.
