Pinna The evolutionary role of the pinna has been as an aid to sound collection and point-of-origin location (Figs 1.1A, B). However, selective breeding of dogs has resulted in pinnae that often appear to have been designed more as lids to prevent access by foreign bodies or as vehicles to carry ornate displays of exuberant growths of hair. Despite these changes the functionality of the ear appears to have been maintained.
