ABSTRACT

The two biggest topics in this chapter are two large and arguably independent subsystems of the health care system. The mental health care system and the long-term care system involve all eight levels of care, both inpatient and outpatient sites of care, and many of the health professionals already described. Two smaller topics involve two additional subsystems, both of which serve many people-dental care and vision care. One large system that is not included here is the Veterans Administration (VA), which is also an independent subsystem. However, it serves as a major example of a targeted system, so it will be discussed in Chapter 20.
