ABSTRACT

Communication inescapably pervades society daily. Each day, humans experience telephones, televisions, radios, computers, personal interactions, and written communications. Silent, nonverbal communications accentuate personal conversations. Such experiences facilitate the transmission of messages between senders and receivers that convey innumerable ideas and concepts among and between communicating entities. Conveying ideas and achieving mutual understanding between the communicating factions is not always easy. For example, communication may occur between members of the justice system and individuals that do not speak, read, or write English. People within the justice system either must have some ability to communicate in a language that is familiar to such an individual or use the services of an interpreter.
