ABSTRACT
Autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved cellular process that involves lysosomemediated intracellular degradation and recycling of intracellular organelles and proteins to maintain homeostasis during cellular stress. It also serves to selectively remove damaged mitochondria by a process known as mitophagy. Both autophagy and mitophagy are vital to the metabolic function and the homeostasis of the liver.
