ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the hazard, in particular laser light. An awareness of laser safety is extremely important, not only for the benefit of users and ancillary/support staff but also to answer patient questions and concerns. Laser systems that can produce uninterrupted laser energy are called continuous wave lasers. Pulsed laser systems emit a beam that is less than 0.25 s in duration. The pulsing in a pulsed laser system is achieved internal to the laser. When required, laser eyewear must be labeled with the wavelength coverage it is designed for and its optical density. Photomechanical damage occurs when the laser energy is deposited faster than mechanical relaxation can occur and typically occurs for intense pulses shorter than 1 nanoseconds. Laser users need to look toward the American National Institute Standards Z136 series for user laser safety guidance.
