ABSTRACT

Virtual reality is an emerging technology that is becoming increasingly ubiquitous. As we adjust and begin to accept this new technology, there are many ways it will impact our lives, one aspect of which is relationships and sexuality. In order to understand some of these impacts, one may look at aspects of transhumanism in conjunction with the Japanese bishoujo genre of games, social use of the technology and the future implications and dangers virtual relationships carry. There is already much demand for digital love, especially in Japan, where they are "a large domestic market, estimated at 25 billion yen annually". Emotional and erotic games have been a market niche for a long time and are becoming increasingly accepted as societies around the world become more progressive and in line with the ideas of transhumanism. Humanity has much to gain from virtual reality and human relationships can be augmented from their core through the application of virtual reality.
