ABSTRACT

GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS n Trauma is the most common cause of emergency amputations. n Crush/avulsion are the most common mechanisms of traumatic injury. n Elective amputations can be performed for malignancy, osteomyelitis, vasculitis, gangrene,

or a painful, stiff, or nonfunctional digit of any cause. n Amputation can be performed for traumatic injuries when no replant or salvage option exists. n In patients with severe vascular disease or other high-risk comorbidities, amputation is a quick,

definitive treatment option. n For patients whose primary goal is speedy recovery and expedited return to work, amputation

may be the best option.
