Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a global pandemic; in 2013, there was an estimated 381 million adults living with diabetes, approximately 5% of the world population. By 2035 this gure is projected to grow by >50% such that 592 million adults, 7.5% of the world population, will be aicted.1 is relentless increase is secondary to the growing prevalence of obesity, urbanization, genetic susceptibility and ageing and is aecting both economically auent countries and the developing world.
