ABSTRACT

A heterogeneous group of extracranial carotid arteriopathies, both congenital and acquired, occur relatively infrequently and may produce ischemic central nervous syndromes virtually indistinguishable from those of atherosclerotic origin. e symptomatic loop or coil, carotid kink and spontaneous carotid dissection are among these unusual entities potentially responsible for carotid ow impairment or embolization. is chapter examines the carotid loop or coil, carotid kink and spontaneous dissection, emphasizing anatomic and pathophysiologic details, diagnostic dilemmas and contemporary medical or surgical management controversies.
