ABSTRACT

Carotid body tumour (CBT), carotid paraganglioma and carotid chemodectoma are interchangeable names for an uncommon neuroendocrine tumour, which is occasionally hormonally active. Around 5% of CBTs are bilateral. Historically, surgical management was associated with signicant complications, but due to its potential to metastasize (5%–10% are malignant), aggressive operative treatment is advocated.
