ABSTRACT

Since the introduction of endovascular treatment of carotid artery stenosis (initially with balloon angioplasty, later with additional stenting using devices that were not specically designed for the carotid artery), signicant changes in technique and development of dedicated devices and optimization of pharmacotherapy around the procedure have increased the overall safety of the carotid artery stenting (CAS) procedure. is chapter will deal with the timing and technical aspects of the procedure, including the use of embolic protection devices (EPDs), and will also discuss the pharmacotherapeutic management around CAS. Finally, an overview of the major randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and current guidelines will be given.
