ABSTRACT
In practice, integers and floats have 16, 32, or 64 bits on most computers, but long bit strings are hard to read and we do not need them to explain each part of the representation. Also, using fewer bits highlights the problem of finite precision that we need to overcome, so the following sections will use very short bit strings.
