ABSTRACT

In Chapter 1, it was discussed that separation of different materials in the waste stream is necessary for sustainable solid waste management and efficient resource recovery. When waste materials are kept clean and separated properly, they can be viewed as favorable raw materials for further processing, namely, material recycling or efficient energy recovery. This often happens in the industrial waste management; moreover, it has been proved that minimized waste generation saves money as well as increases the production efficiency. However, when it comes to municipal waste, it is more complicated because of the diversity of the materials. For example, in the local informational brochure, found in any city in Sweden (the so-called sorting guide), there are more than 200 items that should be sorted in more than 10 waste categories, which is not a simple task for the citizens.
