ABSTRACT

Bottom sediments from waterbodies, including rivers, lakes, and estuaries, may need to be removed and relocated for several reasons, including construction needs and for maintaining the navigability of waterways. Sediments that are dredged from waterways and harbors are frequently contaminated by organic pollutants and metals. This limits the possibilities for subsequent handling of the excavated materials, because hazardous effects of the contamination from the sediments in their new location may be introduced.
