Risk Assessment Bowiea species are rarely grown except by plant hobbyists who value the xeritypic attributes of the plant. It can be grown as a potted house plant and is therefore a risk to animals and children who might chew on it and consume the stems and bulbs. Experimentally Bowiea species have been shown to be toxic to dogs, cats, sheep, and goats.2 Human poisoning has occurred when the plant has been misused in herbal remedies.1
