Risk Assessment Fishtail palms are common household and garden plants, and are therefore readily accessible to household pets. Only pets that chew on plants are likely to be affected by the irritant effects of the fishtail palms. Dermatitis is reported in people who are exposed to the raphides after handling the fruit pulp.2
