Risk Assessment Most problems with ivy are associated with contact dermatitis in some people who handle the plants and get the plant sap on their skin.4,5 Similar contact dermatitis has not been reported in animals. However, ivy is a very popular plant in gardens and even as a potted house plant, and therefore is a potential risk to pets that might chew and eat the leaves and fruits.
