ABSTRACT
The primary effect of the tropane alkaloids is on the autonomic nervous system where they antagonize the action of acetylcholine at the muscarinic cholinergic receptors. Affected animals have dilated pupils, decreased digestive tract motility, and decreased salivation. Respiratory and heart rates are elevated. Hallucinogenic effects can also be expected from the central nervous system effects of the alkaloids.
