ABSTRACT

Toxic principle and Mechanism of Action All parts of the plant and especially the fruits are toxic, and contain a variety of biologically active compounds. The most toxic of the compounds include brunfelsamidine and hopeanine. Experimentally the compounds both produce convulsions in mice. Brunfelsamidine causes excitement, seizures and death; while hopeanine is more of a depressant and paralytic.1 Signs of Brunfelsia poisoning can mimic those of strychnine poisoning.
