ABSTRACT

Biochar is a carbon-rich solid produced by pyrolysis of biomass under partial or complete exclusion of oxygen. The process converts labile carbon in biomass into recalcitrant carbon, which resists degradation and can be sequestered in the soil for centuries. Biochar is generally used for soil amendments, reclamation and remediation, oil sand tailing

treatment, lake water de-eutrophication, and carbon sequestration [1-7]. An emerging global new use of biochar is as a growth medium for greenhouse vegetable production [1] and as a carrier for microbial inoculants [8] to enhance soil fertility and crop productivity. This chapter focuses on biochar substrate use in hydroponic vegetable production, as the knowledge in this emergent field is very limited.
