ABSTRACT

The paperboard bin-on-pallet system was a significant improvement over the 30 lb case methods. Each carload of 84 bins eliminated the manual handling of 2800 thirty pound cases. Discharge of raisins from the bins was done by inverting the bins on mechanical tilt tables to allow the raisins to flow out by gravity. The empty liner bags were discarded as trash, but the corrugated bins were collapsed flat, strapped together into piles, and returned to raisin suppliers for reuse. Pallets in RBL rail cars were not part of the industry exchange program, and their return for reuse was cost prohibitive. Some were sold for scrap lumber, while others were shipped to nearby plants or warehouses for reuse.
