ABSTRACT

Children are going to have injuries. Normal play can cause some minor injury to children. The younger the child, the more vulnerable he or she is to abuse. Four-fifths (79.4 percent) of all child fatalities in 2010 were to children under the age of four years. Breaking down that percentage by age revealed that almost half of child fatalities were to children under the age of one year. Children younger than nine years old died from child abuse and neglect at a rate of 17.89 per 100,000 children in the population (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, 2010).
