ABSTRACT

Cognition is mental activity and involves the acquisition, storage, retrieval, and use of knowledge. The “cognitive approach” to psychology is oriented to theories based upon mental structures and processes; it is based upon the broader field referred to as cognitive science, which studies the nature of knowledge, its components, its development, and its use (Matlin, 1994, pp. 2, 9). Cognitive neuroscience examines how the structure and function of the brain explain cognitive processes (Matlin, 1994, p. 10).
