ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sewage sludge, and the related topics of PAHs in soils and sediments. Soils are often amended with sewage sludge because it contains nutrients. Sedimentsin rivers, lakes, harbors, and estuaries-tend to accumulate the PAHs that exited the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in the liquid effluent. Soils that have been amended with sludge can end up in water resources due to soil erosion. Sediments can also become soils, when sediment dredged from harbors or rivers is deposited on land.
