ABSTRACT

Chemical compounds in municipal wastewater consist of a wide range of naturally occurring and man-made organic and inorganic constituents. They include industrial and household chemicals, compounds excreted by humans, and by-products formed during wastewater treatment processes. Certain classes of chemicals have attracted increased attention from the general public and the scientific community for their potential impact on the human health and the environment. These include, among others, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
