ABSTRACT

As we have discussed, the semantic web is becoming increasingly ubiquitous. More small and large businesses, such as Oracle, IBM, Adobe, Software AG, and many others, are actively using semantic web technologies, and broad application areas such as health-care and life sciences are considering its possibilities for data integration (W3C, 2009). Sir Tim Berners-Lee originally envisioned the semantic web as a machine-understandable web (Berners-Lee, 1998). The power of the semantic web lies in its codification of relationships among web resources (W3C, 2009). Because of this, semantic web technologies are being used to represent and analyze social media data. For example, Resource Description Framework (RDF) is being used to represent social networks, while Web Ontology Language (OWL) is being used to represent ontologies for understanding social networks. Furthermore, SPARQL is being used to query social networks, while Semantic Web Rule Language (SWRL) is being used to analyze social networks.
