ABSTRACT

Prison gangs exist in many prisons and jails throughout the U.S., and they influence criminal activity and behavior in the community. Prison gang members have ties to street gangs and influence much of the crime the street gangs commit and the profits they reap. This chapter will examine the definitions and history of prison gangs, as well as the violence and other problems their existence brings to both the prisons and the streets. We will wrap up with an examination of prison gang management strategies and what we can expect from prison gangs in the future.
