ABSTRACT

Keywords: Carbonyl chemistry, multistep, tandem, one-pot synthesis, column chromatography, NMR spectroscopy

Safety: Sodium and potassium hydroxide and sulfuric and hydrochloric acids are corrosive and will cause severe burns on contact with skin. Diethyl ether, acetone, hexanes, ethyl acetate, and benzene are flammable solvents and irritants; they should be used in a well-ventilated area. Also, ensure that ether is freshly opened as it tends to form explosive peroxides upon prolonged contact with oxygen. Diethyl malonate is an irritant and is flammable. p-Toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate is an inhalation irritant. All reagents must be used in hoods and gloves should be worn. It should never be used outside a fume hood. Many labs prohibit it completely because of its long-term toxicity. For full MSDS, please visit www.sigmaaldrich.com.
