ABSTRACT

Safety: Butyllithium is an extremely strong base and will cause severe burns. Must be handled with extreme care and in a moisture-free environment. May ignite on contact with water. Lithium aluminum hydride is a fine powder and is highly reactive with water (may ignite on contact). Handle with care to avoid making powder airborne and inhaling it. Never weigh more than 2 g at a time. Tetrahydrofuran (THF) is a volatile solvent and is extremely flammable. When using as a solvent for exothermic reactions, make sure to provide adequate cooling. THF is an ether and is prone to forming explosive organic peroxides after prolonged contact with air. Make sure that the THF in use is always fresh.
