ABSTRACT

Toyota articulated 14 principles that clearly relate to the philosophy of respect for people, continuous improvement, and the elimination of waste (Liker, 2004). These principles are worth listing as they provide underpinnings to “the doing” of Lean. We have added comments after these principles to begin your thinking about their relationship and applicability to healthcare. As you read the book, the translation of principles into working concepts, tools, and examples will give more robust meaning to this list.
