ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the modulation formats that combine the amplitude modulation and differential phase modulation schemes, that is, the multilevel amplitude-shift keying (ASK), and phase-shift keying (PSK). Comparisons between multilevel and binary modulations are made. Critical issues of transmission performance for multilevel are identified. A simulation platform based on MATLAB®–Simulink® [1,2] for multi-level modulation format is described. Furthermore, for reaching the 100 Gb/s Ethernet, a number of multilevel modulations such as PSK and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) are proposed and given in the last section of the chapter.
