ABSTRACT

Herbicides are among the most extensively used of pesticides. They are applied to large areas of arable land-and also to parks and gardens in urban areas. Most have very low toxicity toward animals, and a fair number of them are readily available to the general public for weed control on lawns, vegetable plots, paths, and drives. This contrasts with the situation regarding insecticides, many of which have appreciable mammalian toxicity and are considered to be unsafe for general use. Only a very limited range of insecticides are generally available for use in gardens, etc.
