ABSTRACT

If organizations eventually realize that downsizing isn’t the answer to improvement of the long-term bottom line, if they eventually realize that downsizing inevitably comes back to bite them and to bleed them, if they realize that efficiency increasing tools and techniques provide only a partial solution, one that turns out to be short term, then what is the answer? How do we cut costs and/or generate the necessary increases in employee productivity? Should we break out the whips, the cattle prods? Should we introduce a bonus system? Or is the issue more deep seated than that?
