O perators such as the Laplacian A introduced in the first chapter will be our chief objects of study in this book. A is a second-order operator, and it is an im portant
and from some points of view surprising fact that A is the square of the first-order
operator D = d + d*. The mechanism lying behind this is the theory of Clifford
algebras, which will be developed in this chapter.
