ABSTRACT

Clerking is the term used to describe the structured preoperative assessment of patients by means of history taking, examination and relevant special investigations. It applies to all patients admitted for any procedures. This is the time for explanation, answering questions and obtaining informed consent. Additional paperwork (prescription charts, blood request forms, requests for radiographs and electrocardiograms [ECGs]) should be completed, followed by communication with senior colleagues, the anaesthetist and nursing staff should any potential problems need to be addressed.
