ABSTRACT

The epidermis of the skin is composed of stratified squamous epithelium with several distinct layers. The lowermost layer is the stratum basale or stratum germinativum, which contains the suprabasal keratinocytes. The next layer of cells immediately above the basal layer is the stratum spinosum. Above this layer is the stratum granulosum (granular layer), which consists of one to three layers of flattened cells containing keratohyalin granules.
