7.1 The Concrete Substrate
Waterproofing membranes for concrete decks are a major market for polyurethane sealants. This market has grown with the extensive use of plazas and parking garages. Surely, it will continue to grow with the use of membranes in such applications as bridges. Resistance to physical and chemical stresses was the reason that polyurethanes have captured much of the market. Another reason is the ease with which urethanes can be extended with hydrocarbons. Extension both reduces cost and improves the properties required for this market. Hence, this chapter will deal with both membranes and with hydrocarbon extension of polyurethane sealants.
